1:19 And this is the Testimony of John, ...
when the Jews out of Jerusalem sent Priests and Levites to him so that they might ask him, ... "Who are you?"
1:20 And he confessed and did not deny. And he confessed that, "I am not the Christ."
1:21 And they asked him, "What then? Are you Elias"? ... And he says, "I am not."
"Are you The Prophet"? ... And he answered, "No."
1:22 Then they said to him, "Who are you?"
"So that we may give an answer to the ones having sent us."
"What do you say about yourself?"
1:23 He said, "I, a voice crying in the wilderness."
"Make straight the way of the Lord," as said Isaiah the Prophet.
1:24 And the ones having been sent were of the Pharisees.
1:25 And they asked him, and said to him, ... "Why then do you baptize, ...
if you are not the Christ, nor Elias, nor the Prophet?"
1:26 The John answered them saying, ... "I baptize in water."
"Among you has stood one whom you do not recognize, ..."
1:27 "the One coming after me, of whom I am not worthy, ..."
"that I should loosen of him the thong of the sandal."
1:28 These things happened in Bethany, beyond the Jordan where John was baptizing.
